Major General Ramesh Kakar joined National Defense Academy in June 1965, and was commissioned into 5 KUMAON in June 1969. He retired in July 2006 after putting in 37 years of dedicated service to the nation.
During the course of his long career, he saw active action in 1971, Indo Pak War in Jammu-Sialkot sector, insurgent action in Mizoram, and was deployed predominantly in J and K and high-altitude areas of Ladakh, Sikkim, and Tawan in Arunachal Pradesh.
During Kargil War, from the months of May to July 1999 as Brigade Commander79 (I) Mountain Brigade; he won laurels for the nation by clearing the Mashkoh Valley and by capturing the most strategic heights of pt. 4875 in Draz and restored the Line of Actual Control over 40 kms long Mashkoh Valley; as was existing before the Kargil War of all intruders.
His Brigade won a total of 143 gallantry awards in The Kargil War to include 2xParam Vir Chakra (Famous Major Vikram Batra of Dil Mange Mor fame and Sepoy Sanjay Kumar), 2x Maha Vir Chakra Captain Anuj Nayyar and Sepoy Ao, 13 vir Chakra, amongst others, which is one of the highest that have been awarded to any Brigade in Indian Army in its history.
